Abstract

Your recent article on comets (October 1997 pp 41–44), states that “Hale–Bopp was the first really good opportunity to view a comet since Halley's comet came round in 1910”. I am surprised that – like apparently everyone else – you have forgotten the cometary annus mirabilis of 1957, when we saw two bright comets, Arend–Roland and Mrkos. They were both, to my mind, more impressive than Hale–Bopp.
