Abstract

A petrographic study of several samples from the Central Regio of Costa Rica has been carried out. Basalts and diabases has been recognized in the Nicoya Ophiolite Complex. La Cruz Formation is made up of olivinic basalts, diabases and 2-pyroxene andesites. The Grifo Alto Formation corresponds to andesitic intermediate rocks and ignimbrites with xenolites aof andesitic and granodoritic rocks. Cataclastic metamorfism has been recognaized in Delcias creek. Diabase dikes cross the sedimentary sequence. Hornfelses related to the Escazú stock belong to Peña Negra and La Cruz formations.
