Abstract

Nitriding combustion synthesis of ultrafine magnesium nitride (Mg3N2) powder was achieved by using a newly developed gas dilution technique, with a low-melting-point alkaline metal powder (Mg) and N2/Ar mixed gas as reactants. The addition of Ar to N2 remarkably prevented the agglomeration of Mg melts and enhanced the nitridation of Mg during the combustion synthesis process. The as-synthesized Mg3N2 powder showed well-crystallized cubic morphology with a mean particle size of 2.5 μm, and is a promising candidate for hydrogen storage materials.
