Abstract

A series of orthorhombic perovskite Sm1– x Tb x FeO3 ( $x$ = 0, 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, and 0.5) powder was readily prepared by sol–gel combustion process. The Tb-doping effects on the structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of SmFeO3 have been studied in detail. Pure phase SmFeO3 was obtained when calcinated at 900 °C for 3 h. By Tb doping, the synthesis temperature of orthorhombic perovskite-type Sm1– x Tb x FeO3 powder increased to 1100 °C. Moreover, the ferromagnetic (FM) interactions within the system are effectively enhanced, while the anti-FM coupling is greatly weakened, which is ascribed to the exchange coupling between Tb and Fe ions.
