Abstract

Several developments in combustion diagnostics with tunable excimer lasers are reported. Two-wavelength operation of a tunable KrF laser was realized and is promising for temperature measurements or multi-species detection with only one laser. Simultaneous imaging of OH and O2 was achieved with this laser. Two-dimensional saturation spectroscopy of OH was demonstrated using a XeCl laser. From the ratio of images in the linear and saturated regime, relative effective lifetimes in two dimensions were derived. First results are reported for two-dimensional visualization of combustion in a real Diesel engine. Fuel jets were observed by Mie scattering and laser induced fluorescence (LIF). Flame propagation was observed using LIF of unburnt Diesel vapor.Several developments in combustion diagnostics with tunable excimer lasers are reported.
