Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this article, the overall combustion characteristics of non-edible linseed (Linum usitatissimum) biodiesel blended with petrodiesel (PD) are presented. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of a fraction of biodiesel in the blends, the variation of load (20 to 100% in a step of 20%) and compression ratio (CR) (14:1, 16:1, and 18:1) on combustion characteristics. The obtained result, compared with baseline fuel PD, is operated at rated CR 17.5:1. The result shows the higher value of cylinder combustion pressure (CP), a rate of pressure rise (RPR), cumulative heat release, combustion duration, and combustion mean gas temperature and lower ignition delay (ID) for biodiesel and its blends compared with PD. On an average, the ID increased by 30% and 3.3% at CR 14:1 and 16:1, respectively, and reduced by 28.3% at CR 18:1 for LB blends.
