Abstract

An aerospace plane concept that combines the extraordinary propulsion and power generating capabilities of MHD air breathing engines and aneutronic (neutron-free) fusion rocket engines is summarized. This vehicle, using liquid hydrogen as coolant, fuel, and working fluid, for power and propulsion, generated: air breathing propulsion from takeoff to Mach 7; MHD air breathing propulsion and power from Mach 7 to Mach 14; combined MHD airbreathing and aneutronic fusion power and propulsion for Mach 14 cruise; or for fusion power and propulsion from Mach 14 to orbital speed. This resulted in a reusable air breathing SSTO launch vehicle with less than 1/3 the propellant of chemical airbreathing designs. This enabled rapid space access with aircraft-like operations and takeoff weights.
