Abstract

The falling ladder problem including friction with the wall and the ground is solved numerically. The problem is used as an example to teach both numerical methods as well as programming techniques jointly with theoretical mechanics. The solution is computed for an arbitrary period of time, which requires to handle loss of contact with the wall and collisions with the ground. The differential equations describing the motion are solved using the python programming language and the related programme is provided as a supplementary material. Results for the falling ladder with and without friction are presented and discussed.
