Abstract
There numerous clinical reports of keloid treatments. In this paper we had evaluated the effectiveness of a combination therapy in steroid injection, and electron beam irradiation of keloid treatments in our hospital. There were two groups: excision followed by electron beam therapy (Group l) and excision with the steroid injection followed by electron beam therapy (Group 2). The result of the treatments was recorded as ”good”, ”improved”, or ”failure”. In group 1, 43 keloids in 39 patients were treated. Average follow-up period was 31.1±4.5 months. There were 16 keloid treatments that resulted in ”failure”. The recurrent rate was 37%. In Group 2, 31 keloids in 26 patients were treated. The average follow-up period was 13.1±5.7 months. There were 5 keloid treatments that resulted in ”failure” and the recurrent rate was 16.1%. There was a significant difference between group 1 and 2(P=0.0472). Wound disruption with poor healing and secondary procedure was performed in three patients. The cosmetic result was improved in both methods. However, the ”multiple combination treatment”, with the excision of keloid, injection with the steroid immediately followed by electron beam therapy was more beneficial and effective. It provided us an alternative method for treatment of disfiguring or refractory keloid lesion.
