Abstract
When a single ultrashort light pulse propagates through a birefringent optical fiber, degenerate cross-phase modulation occurs between the two orthogonal linearly polarized components of the pulse. The combined effects of pulse walk-off and degenerate-cross-phase modulation are characterized theoretically and experimentally. They cause asymmetry and decrease of the induced spectral broadening in comparison with pure self-phase modulation.
