Abstract

Objective To investigate the efficacy of scleral buckling combined with silicone oil removal for eyes with silicone oil tamponaded after surgery for the treatment of traumatic endophthalmitis. Methods The data of 8 eyes with silicone oil tamponaded of 8 cases with serious traumatic endophthalmitis after vitrectomy were analyzed retrospectively. All cases received silicone oil removal combined with scleral buckling. The followed up time was 6 months. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure(IOP), and condition of retina were observed. Results The retina at 6 months after surgery was flat in 7 eyes. The visual acuity after surgery was better than that after injury (t=6.190, P=0.001). The difference of intraocular pressure (IOP) was statistically significant between operated eyes and contralateral eyes (t=-1.940, P=0.093). One case underwent silicone oil tamponaded combined with scleral buckling again, the retina was attached and the visual acuity improved 6 months postoperatively. Conclusion Scleral buckling combined with silicone oil removal is effective for eyes with silicone oil tamponaded after surgery in the treatment of traumatic endophthalmitis, it can prevent the complications such as retinal detachment and atrophy of eyeball.
