Abstract

We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of combined optical and atropine therapy in the treatment of anisometropic or strabismic amblyopia. Patients in the penalization group were instructed to instill 1 drop of 1% atropine sulphate in the fellow eye daily and their spectacle prescription for the fellow eye was replaced with a plano lens. A control group was treated with full time patching. The treatment continued until the visual acuity of the amblyopic eye became 1.0 or stayed the same after 3 consecutive visits. The mean follow-up was 6 months. At the end of the therapy, improvement of visual acuity did not show significant difference between the two groups. Combined optical and atropine therapy is effective as an alternative or supportive therapy for anisometropic or strabismic amblyopia.
