Abstract
In this paper individual pitch control is combined with trailing-edge flap (TEF) control, both designed as multi-loop proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers, to significantly reduce blade damage equivalent loads. OpenFAST NREL 5MW aerodynamics are enhanced with dedicated aerodynamic polars of TEF blade elements. The NREL 5MW model, including the TEF extension, is incorporated into Simulink, and PID controller parameters are optimized in a closed-loop optimization setup. The DEL decrease is confirmed via an extensive simulation campaign using the non-linear wind turbine simulation environment.
