Combined fungal and bacterial infection in deep burns of the lower limb - a case report.

Abstract

Fungal infections are one of the most common diseases. Superficial mycoses affect the skin and visible mucous membranes. Deep mycoses include organ and systemic mycoses. The incidence of these diseases is increasing due to the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids and cytostatics. Mycoses (yeasts and filamentous fungi) occur more often in patients with burns than in other patients; especially in patients with large and deep extent burns. In this case report, we are presenting acase of a62-year-old patient hospitalized at the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, University Hospital Brno, with extensive deep burns (2nd-4th degree) covering 35% total body surface area (TBSA), predominantly in both lower limbs. During hospitalization, the patient was diagnosed with acombined bacterial and fungal infection for which targeted therapy was indicated.
