Abstract

Purpose: Thoracic surgeons face the challenge of obtaining biopsies of smaller, peripheral nodules that are difficult to localise. Electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) with the SuperDimension navigation system enables surgeons to guide a catheter in real-time through the entire tracheobronchial tree. This system functions as a ‘GPS’ system, enabling surgeons to perform direct biopsies or inject methylene blue at the site of the nodule for immediate video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery biopsy. This study reported initial experience of the first Australian surgeon-led service using combined ENB and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) to biopsy and localise suspicious lesions.
