Abstract

This paper explores the benefits of the controlled grinding surface of the AISID2 steel. The effect of Sol-gel abrasive wheel and cryogenic cooling mode on surface integrity has been proved. These results lead to the higher level of compressive residual stresses and lower density of micro-cracks compared to combination of Al2O3 abrasive wheel and soluble oil cooling mode. Using controlled grinding, the fatigue life has been improved to three time. The Dang Van multiaxial fatigue criterion was used to predict the combined beneficial controlled grinding effects on the high cycle fatigue limit of AISI D2 tool steel.
