Abstract

This book is a delight to read. Its theme is the multidisciplinary of patients with rheumatic disease. The book is organized around three sections. Section I (chapters 1 through 3) reviews diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases from a British perspective, which leads one to useful and interesting insights into the approach we apply to similar problems in the United States. Section II (chapters 4 through 6) reviews the contributions of nursing professionals, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists to patient care. The third section (chapters 7 through 12) lays out a comprehensive combined care approach to the many needs of patients suffering from arthritis. A team member called a metrologist is described. This person is a nurse practitioner who provides active patient and also makes clinical assessments and measurements for clinical research protocols. An immediate yield of this innovative approach has been a marked decrease in drug trial drop-out
