To obviate the difficulties inherent in the use of each alone, reinfusion of ascitic fluid with the simultaneous administration of mercurial or thiazide diuretics has been used. However, this results in only modest diuresis. We evaluated the use of more potent diuretics in combination with ascitic fluid infusion in the management of massive ascites.The effect of ascitic fluid infusion and furosemide administration alone and in combination was studied in eight patients with massive ascites.
