Abstract

In this communication, we present the synergistic influence of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and a prokaryotic non-pathogenic bacteria-Halomonas BVR1 for the adsorptive recovery of europium. The surface characterizations reveal the interaction of cationic europium hydroxides with triazine units of g-C3N4 and the functional groups on the surface of bacteria. The prospective application is illustrated in recovering europium from a spent fluorescent lamp phosphor. Endowed with a worthy potential to recover europium, this directed application-oriented lucid method opens its doors to explore carbonaceous materials in conjunction with microorganisms as a sustainable alternative for the recovery of other precious rare earths.
