Abstract

During the past two years regional arterial infusion chemotherapy using methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil has been combined with surgery for oral carcinoma. Although the results are considered to be preliminary, no increased survival rate has been observed. Some modifications of the surgery as indicated by previously established principles have been made, and several inoperable cases became operable after a course of chemotherapy. The value of a tissue assay to determine the effectiveness of a chemotherapeutic drug has been emphasized. Early findings utilizing enhancement of exogenous tritiated thymidine uptake into the DNA complex in the presence of the chemotherapeutic agent have been sufficiently encouraging to believe that an in vitro and an in vivo assay is possible.
