Abstract

In this paper, a combination of the geometrical optics and physical optics (GO/PO) hybrid method and the physical theory of diffraction (PTD) is presented for the analyses of electromagnetic (EM) scattering and SAR imaging simulation from a complicated electrically large target. For this method, the scattering field from surfaces on a target is calculated with the GO/PO hybrid method, the diffraction field is calculated with PTD. Then the contribution of diffraction field and the scattering field from targets with different shapes are analyzed. It is shown that for the targets with wedges that are composed of two nearly mutually perpendicular flat surface, the scattering field from the surfaces is much strong than the diffraction field from edges. Otherwise, the diffraction field must be taken into consideration, especially for the directions away from the mirror region. The simulated SAR images also show the method can be applied to the simulation of SAR images.
