Abstract

This paper investigates on a combination of Defected Ground Structure (DGS) and dielectric rod in the normal mode helical antenna (NMHA) design. The effects of the combination of DGS and dielectric rod to the helical antenna performances were studied. All designs operate at low frequency in the range of the UHF band. The DGS and dielectric rod were proposed in order to shift down the resonant frequency to the lower side. Based on the results, it was found that by using the DGS and dielectric rod, the resonant frequency can be shifted to the lower side about 19.6% compared to conventional design while reducing the helical antenna size.
