Abstract
It is now more than 15 years since I first presented a paper at a medical conference in Roswell Park Memorial Institute for Dr. James Holland which described the treatment of 60 consecutive patients with metastatic breast cancer using CVFMP chemotherapy (Cytoxan, vincristine, 5-fluorouracil, methotrexate, prednisone). At Dr. Holland's urging, I then presented the findings at the 1969 American Society of Clinical Oncology Meeting in San Francisco. Following this presentation a number of investigators abandoned the prevalent modality of single drug therapy until relapse, and embarked on combining many drugs of differing biochemical activity in an effort to improve the response rates and lengths of duration of responses in patients with metastatic breast cancer. Both single investigators and the large cooperative groups were motivated to look back at the original work of Dr. Ezra Greenspan, as well as to review my data, before embarking on several prospective controlled studies in the treatment of advanced breast cancer.
