Abstract

Four osteostracan species, variously distributed in the two genera Escuminaspis and Alaspis, have been described from the Frasnian Escuminac Formation of Miguasha (Quebec). A reconsideration of the holotypes of these species and of the new material collected in this formation shows that Alaspis (“Cephalaspis”) rosamundae and Alaspis macrotuberculata are synonyms of Escuminaspis laticeps. However, “Cephalaspis” patteni is clearly distinct from the latter by the shape and ornamentation of its cephalic shield. It is referred here to a new genus, Levesquaspis nov. gen., L. patteni and E. laticeps form a clade, which is characterized by the loss of the lateral fields.
