Abstract

Rita Colwell, who has served as director of the U.S. National Science Foundation since August 1998, steps down from that position on 21 February. After fulfilling most of her 6‐year term, Colwell will assume the chairmanship of Canon U.S. Life Sciences, Inc., an Arlington,Virginia‐based subsidiary of Canon USA, Inc.Colwell also will become a faculty member of The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, where she will help to develop an international center for the study of infectious diseases, water, and public health. In addition, she will be a distinguished university professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.
