Abstract

The emphasis on the commercial use of so-called smart materials continues. One area of activity that involves polymeric materials is the construction of so-called smart windows. There are a number of ways smart material behavior can be activated or induced including application of light and stress. The technologies available for smart window activation include: photochromic, thermotropic, liquid crystal, suspended particle, reflective hydrides, and electrochromic. Smart windows change the light transmittance, transparency, or shading of windows in response to some environmental signal. Such windows are intended to reduce energy demand through reducing air conditioning and heating loads as well as making more effective use of the natural temperature.
