Abstract

The nonlinear radial compression of a column in a cylindrical screw- pinch in studied. The effects of the interaction of the electromagnetic fields with the discharging capacitors of the pinch are included. Estimates for the self-crowbarring time of the system and compression ratio of the column are obtained together with properties of the electric field in the region between the column and the conducting shell. Explicit nonlinear motions are determined for special pinches.
