Abstract

1. 1. A method is described for successful colostomy in the duck. 2. 2. The establishment of patent colostomies requires a strict adherence to an outlined routine of daily post-surgical care; during this period, high plasma corticosterone concentrations and adrenal hypertrophy often occur. 3. 3. Although resting plasma corticosterone concentrations become normal at 3–4 months after surgery, plasma aldosterone concentrations are at this time almost double those found in intact, sham-operated controls. 4. 4. Normal daily intakes of food and water, plasma electrolyte concentrations and cloacal water and electrolyte excretion occur in chronically colostomized birds. 5. 5. Retrograde movement of cloacal urine into the colon does not seem to be essential for the maintenance of steady-state hydro-osmotic balance in freshwater birds.
