Abstract

In 1992, Spinelli et al (Spinelli P, Dal Fante M, Mancini A: Self-expanding mesh stent for endoscopic palliation of rectal obstructing tumors: A preliminary report. Surg Endosc 6:72–74, 1992) first reported placement of a modified Gianturco-Rosch stent within the colon for management of large bowel obstruction. Since then, a large amount of data has been accrued for SEMS use within the large bowel. Colorectal stents are designed to treat malignant luminal obstruction of the large bowel. Although their use is primarily for palliation of malignant obstruction, they can also be used within the colon as a preoperative modality. This review will provide an overview of the techniques and outcomes of colorectal stent placement for malignant disease.
