Abstract

Three audits were undertaken in a colorectal service within an enhanced recovery programme. Each audit had a separate objective. Audit one examined actual theatre times against predetermined times. Audit two explored reasons for delay of discharge home and audit three surveyed the views of patients on postoperative supplemental drinks. The audits were retrospective, prospective and a survey respectively. The results from audit one showed that in general, the main predetermined theatre times were accurate. Results from audit two showed that the majority of delays were related to social reasons. Finally, audit three found that when patients were offered postoperative supplemental drinks, most were able to tolerate them. These audits, despite being small, have led to improvements in care.
