Abstract

It has been pointed out by Brodsky that pp exclusive formation of the J/ζ in a nuclear target should be characterized by anomalously small initial state p absorption in the nucleus. This effect is due to the small impact separation of the antiquarks in the antiproton, corresponding to a small color moment, and is called color transparency. First evidence for color transparency has been seen at Brookhaven in large angle pp elastic scattering in nuclei above 9.5 GeV/c. The possibility of pp formation of the J/ζ using a nuclear gas jet target and the E-760 chramonium detector ion the Fermilab Antiproton Accumulator Ring has been considered. Preliminary estimates suggest that detection of color transparency in such an arrangement is possible, provided background rejection is better than 103–104 compared with the signal.
