Abstract

Abstract In the late twentieth century, non-violent revolutions became far more common, with many regimes falling in the face of widespread peaceful protests. These became known as “colour revolutions” after the colourful ribbons worn by protestors to identify their cause. Among the best known are the People Power revolution that drove Ferdinand Marcos from power in the Philippines, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. Non-violent protests also toppled the communist regimes in Poland, East Germany, and Hungary and led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Such revolutions continued into 2014 in Ukraine and 2018 in Armenia.
