Abstract

The island of Trinidad was discovered in 1498 by Columbus and remained part of the Spanish Empire until 1797 when it was captured by Abercromby during the French Napoleonic Wars for the English in whose hands it has remained since as a Crown Colony. The island is the second largest unit of the new West Indies Federation and is 1,684 sq. miles in extent and has a cosmopolitan population of nearly 80,000. According to the 1946 Census the racial pattern in the island stood as follows:-
