Abstract

Objective To investigate the presentation and diagnostic value of ultrasonography in traumatic carotid cavernous fistula (CCF). Methods A total of 10 patients treated in our hospital between January 2007 and December 2008 were enrolled in this study. Among these patients, 9 were confirmed to have CCF by DSA. The characteristics of color Doppler ultrasonography in the orbit were retrospectively analyzed. Results All of the 9 cases showed dilated superior ophthalmic vein (SOV), reverse flow in the SOV and arterialized flow spectrum. The diameter of dilated superior ophthalmic vein was 2.2 to 5.0 mm.Conclusion Color Doppler ultrasonography is cost-effective, non-invasive and accurate, and thus can be a first choice in diagnosis of CCF. Key words: Carotid-cavernous sinus fistula; Angiography, digital subtraction; Craniocerebral trauma; Venous insufficiency; Venous dilatation
