Abstract

The history of research into color classification is traced, looking at both the variation of linguistic categorization of colors in different cultures and at the work of anthropologists concerned with classification by colors and its symbolic meaning. The triadic classification by colors (black, white, and red), which is especially prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, is discussed. The color triad is interpreted as a device for philosophical categorizations and the ‘magic’ or ‘sacred’ power of red is noted in other contexts − such as within the Christian church. However, any combination of colors from the triad may have different concrete references in different situations in both Europe and Africa.
