Abstract

According to U.S. Homeland Security Department statistics, between 1999 and 2008 the number of Colombians admitted into the United States as fiancees of U.S. citizens or residents grew 321%. Colombia has consistently been listed in the top ten fiancee-sending countries since 1999, the only South American country in the top ten and just behind Mexico. The number of International Marriage Brokers (IMBs) facilitating these matches has jumped from approximately three in 1995 to more than 65 in 2009. To date, and despite a rapidly growing literature about Colombia, these dramatic increases in emigration and the participation of Colombian women in marriage-related forms of migration have not piqued migration scholars' interest.
