Abstract
A modification of the Wet Track Abrasion Test of McCoy and Coyne for assessing road surfaces was developed for the characterization of the performance of surface dressings. The tent was applied to emulsion-based systems during their curing period. Parameters influencing setting rates are extensively discussed on the basis of information obtained with this test in combination with emulsion breaking, emulsifier titration and light microscopy experiments. The most important factors Include water evaporation, chemical interactions between emulsifier solution/mineral aggregate (for instance carbonate), bitumen grade and application conditions such an temperature and rolling.
