Abstract

By using a kinetic model, we can easily resolve the observed effective lifetimes of the K {ital n}{sup 2}{ital S} ({ital n}=8--11) and {ital n} {sup 2}D (n=6--8) states in the presence of the H{sub 2} gas. Thereby, in accordance with the Stern-Volmer equation, the radiative lifetimes and the collisional deactivation cross sections of these states can be determined. The lifetimes observed in this work agree satisfactorily with results reported elsewhere. The cross section for the {ital n} {sup 2}S state increases with increasing {ital n}, whereas that for the {ital n} {sup 2}D state tends to decrease. A qualitative explanation for this {ital n} dependence is given.
