Abstract

Line widths of ten lines in the 0-0 band of OH 2Σ +− 2π have been measured in an atmospheric pressure flame. The method is applied to each line separately, and consists of measuring both the absorption on a continuum and the absorption of the same line emitted from a sharp line source. It is assumed that the absorption lines have Voigt profiles, and are unshifted by collision broadening. The collision broadening parameter a is determined by finding that value which makes the two measurements consistent. The results show an initial decline in a with increasing J, in good agreement with Engleman, (1) followed by an increase in a with J. It is suggested that the latter behavior may be related to a reported predissociation at about J = 13.
