Abstract

The shift and broadening of 25 two-photon lines of the 3s2 1S to 3snd D series and 11 lines of the 3s2 1S to 3snp 1P two-photon forbidden series due to collision with Ar and the self-shift and self-broadening of 25 two-photon lines of the 3s2 1S to 3snd 1D series were measured using two-photon resonant ionisation and a thermionic detection technique. The dependence of the shift and broadening due to collision with Ar on the principal quantum number is discussed and compared with the experimental data for other atomic species and with theoretical estimates. The occurrence of two-photon forbidden transition lines and their lineshift and line broadening are considered as the formation of a Rydberg Mg2 excimer and a Mg2 ArN Fermi complex.
