Abstract

Measurements of the depolarization ratio of the Rayleigh light scattered by compressed argon, between 3 and 20 bar at room temperature, have been carried out. The experimental value of the depolarized intensity for a vanishing observed volume is in very good agreement with that obtained in other recent measurements, but it is in disagreement with the values obtained from the experiments on the spectral profile, and with the value calculated in the framework of the classical dipole-induced-dipole model.
