Abstract

AbstractTranslational energy losses ΔE in keV‐collisions have been determined for peptide ions and for caesium iodide cluster ions subsequently decomposing to specific fragment ions, and the dependences of these energies upon transmission have been investigated. Parent ions decomposing to certain fragment ions exhibit energy losses which are independent of transmission, while parent ions associated with other fragment ions show strong dependence of energy loss upon transmission. These findings are interpreted in terms of energy redistributions of tens of eV taking place in single collisions via direct momentum‐transfer.
