Abstract

The translational energy loss attending the collision-induced charge-inversion reaction A − → A +, occurring in the second field-free region of a VG ZAB-2F mass spectrometer, has been measured for six ionic species generated from a CH 4 /N 2O mixture. The measurements enable the energetic states of the products to be identified. In certain cases (particularly for NO +) the product ion is formed in an excited electronic state. The energy states of the products depend on the nature of the collision gas, and, where nitrogen is employed for this purpose, electronic excitation of the collision gas occurs.
