Abstract

The collision-gas pressure dependence of charge-stripping reactions of 4 keV Ar +· ions in collisions with H 2, He, CH 4, Ar, CO 2, and Xe has been investigated. A probability theory for collisional activation has been found to give an adequate description of all the processes investigated. Accurate determination of the pressure at which each peak reaches its maximum intensity provided a method of determining total collision cross-sections for those Ar +· ions in excited electronic states. Charge-stripping efficiencies of different collision gases have been evaluated quantitatively.
