Abstract

Abstract The investigations are related to the relaxation of the electron component to new stationary states and start from different stationary states, caused by an abrupt change of the electric field in a molecular nitrogen plasma. By numerically solving the time-dependent Boltzmann equation for the electron the temporal evolution of the energy distribution and of resulting macroscopic quantities is obtained. A relaxation time of = 10 9 cm −3 s has been obtained in all cases considered, independent of the eventual presence of vibrationally excited molecules. The results are discussed on the basis of the effectiveness of energy transfer in the collisional processes.
