Abstract
The Zagros fold and thrust belt (ZFTB) of Iran, aside from economic significance, is a natural laboratory that holds valuable information about kinematics of Arabia-Eurasia convergence/collision. This young orogenic belt is characterized by noticeable variations along-strike in the stratigraphic makeup and structural style, as well as by discontinuous ophiolite occurrences along the Zagros suture line. In this work, it is argued that tectono-stratigraphic attributes of the ZFTB are controlled by the irregular pre-collisional geometry at the northeastern edge of the Arabian Plate. The proposed collisional model in this paper can a) better explain the modes of tectonic deformation along different parts of the ZFTB and the orogen-parallel variations in stratigraphic architecture of the resulting foreland basin, and b) have implications for understanding the overall dynamics of the Arabia-Eurasia convergence.
