Abstract

This year, US surgeons made huge advances in the transplant world by carrying out the country's first face transplant and first double hand transplant. Although successful life-saving organ transplant operations, including heart, lung and liver, are now commonplace and only limited by the number of donors available, the number of 'non-life-saving' transplants remains relatively low, with around 40 hand transplants having been carried out worldwide.
