Abstract

In 1989, the president of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) appointed a committee of association members to study issues and develop recommendations regarding college biology teaching. This initiative grew out of the NABT Board of Directors' desire to support and define excellence in teaching at the collegiate level. The committee, which includes the authors of this paper, was named the Standards in College Biology Teaching Committee. It is made up of members representing two-year and four-year institutions, and includes a high school teacher. The committee organized its endeavors around the seven fundamental topics of a report by the national advisory group of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society (Sigma Xi 1989):
