Abstract
Ecotourism and nature-based tourism are among the fastest growing segments of the travel industry worldwide. Some institutions of higher education have responded to this growth by focusing courses on these topics. The objectives of this study were to complete a preliminary inventory and to collect descriptive information about ecotourism or nature-based tourism courses and those institutions and faculty that offer these courses in the USA. The inventory identified 21 programs that currently offer at least one ecotourism or nature-based tourism course. The majority of courses have been developed and offered for the first time between 1990 and 1995. Economic development and environmental planning are components of 70% of the courses.
