Abstract

We report measurements of microwave emission from a narrow band ( Δω ω ≤ 0.02 ), tunable ( 7 ≤ ω 2π ≤ 21 GHz ) single mode TE 11 collective (Raman) free electron laser (FEL). The FEL gain has been measured as a function of the wiggler field, beam current, and output frequency, and the transition to the warm beam Compton regime has been detected. Gain is observed over a range of signal intensities of 10 9, and up to 100 kW of power has been observed. The linear response of the FEL is in very good agreement with three-dimensional linear theory and the 12% saturation efficiency agrees well with calculations and preliminary numeric simulations.
